Acute Effects of Secondhand Smoke Exposure in the Upper and Lower Respiratory Tract

Using a controlled exposure system, we are studying the effects of SHS on the upper and lower airways in healthy subjects and subjects with allergic rhinitis or asthma. We will also be studying the effects of 4 consecutive days of SHS exposure. The specific aims of the project are as follows: 1) Measure the effects of a single exposure to concentrations of SHS within the upper ranges of current occupational exposures (600 µg/m3 respirable particulate matter) on sino-nasal patency and nasal inflammatory markers in healthy adults and adults with allergic rhinitis. 2) Measure the effects of 4 consecutive daily exposures to 600 µg/m3 SHS on sino-nasal patency and nasal inflammatory markers in healthy adults and adults with allergic rhinitis. 3) Measure the effects of a single exposure to 600 µg/m3 SHS on lung function and airway inflammatory markers in healthy adults and adults with allergic asthma. 4) Measure the effects of 4 consecutive daily exposures to 600 µg/m3 SHS on lung function and airway inflammatory markers in healthy adults and adults with allergic asthma.
