Joel Simon, MD, MPH
Research has centered on hospital-based and out-patient clinical trials of smoking cessation. Completed studies include: Transdermal Nicotine Therapy for Hospitalized Smokers and Bupropion for Hospital-Based Smoking Cessation. Dr. Simon is a general internist and was a senior staff physician at Kaiser Hayward and Fremont for 11 years before enrolling in the MPH Program at UC Berkeley School of Public Health in 1989. After obtaining an MPH degree in 1990, he was an Ambulatory Care Fellow at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and upon completion of the fellowship program in 1992 stayed on as a VA staff physician and a UCSF faculty member. His research interests are in cardiovascular risk reduction, including smoking cessation, diet, and exercise. He serves on the UCSF Committee on Human Research (IRB) and is an Associate Editor of the ACP Journal Club. He is a Fellow in the American Heart Association, the American College of Nutrition, and the American College of Physicians.
